Pulau yang penuh lagenda ini terletak di utara Semenanjung Malaysia di perairan Selat Melaka.Dikelilingi oleh sekumpulan pulau-pulau yang berjumlah 99 buah.Langkawi mempunyai keluasan kira-kira 478.5 km persegi.Suhunya sekitar 22 C ketika malam dan kebiasaannya melebihi 30 C pada siang hari.Purata hujan tahunannya 200 hingga 250 sm.Biasanya musim tengkujuh berlangsung pada bulan Jun hingga Oktober.
The islands of langkawi lie on the waters of the Straits of Melaka, off the north western shore of Peninsular Malaysia.Regally separate yet easily accessible, its nearest mainland towns are Kuala Perlis and Kuala kedah. On the main island of Langkawi, Kuah and Padang Matsirat are the busiest towns, while Pulau Tuba is the only other inhabited island.The island's total population is approximately 62,000, of which a large majority are Malays, followed by Chinese,Indians and other races. Originally, the economy in langkawi was mainly based on agriculture and fishing.Now the islands have become one of the region's favourite destinations and tourism is becoming an increasingly important sector of the economy. Langkawi is the perennial island in the sun, blessed with an equatorial climate with warm temperatures throughout the year from about 22 Celcius at night to 32 Celcius during the day.Humidity is at 85 to 95 degrees which is normal for the tropics, while rainfall ranges between 200 cm to 250 cm anually.The wet season generally lasts June to October, while the other month are relatively dry. Langkawi's History-The island's cultural and etnic diversity has been shaped by fascinating legends and stories of colourful personalities, passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation.The first king of Langkawi was reputed to be Raja Merong Mahawangsa, a warrior likely to have been of Siamese descent.His bravery in a battle off the waters of the island so impressed the village headman that he was asked to be the first official ruler.Langkawi probably enjoyed prosperity as a port with Chinese and Indian merchants coming to trade.
